Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360 (Standard and AI), Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Freepik AI Video Generator
Project Overview
This project originated from my participation in the 2025 Runway for Mom cohort, a program dedicated to empowering and supporting mothers in their personal and professional growth. After attending a public speaking workshop, I identified an opportunity to extend the learning through an interactive experience.
I partnered with the program’s facilitator, who shared her workshop materials, and designed a gamified quiz to reinforce key concepts in an engaging, learner-centered format. The result is a playful yet purposeful learning experience created specifically for participants in the program.
The Challenge
The public speaking workshop delivered valuable insights, but as a single live session, it offered limited opportunities for learners to revisit and apply key concepts. Without reinforcement, participants risked losing momentum or struggling to translate strategies into practice.
The challenge was to create a concise, engaging experience that extended learning beyond the workshop while staying aligned with the facilitator’s content and meeting the needs of a busy audience.
To create an experience that felt both engaging and instructionally purposeful, I made several key design decisions focused on motivation, personalization, and accessibility.
The avatar select screen encourages personalization and starts the gamified journey.
I designed the quiz as a game-like simulation where learners guide an avatar through a multi-level journey. Each level increases in difficulty, encouraging progressive mastery of concepts.
Key mechanics included:
Avatar selection to create learner ownership
A points system tied to quiz performance
“Try Again!” consequences if learners did not meet the required score
Storytelling elements that positioned the learner as a guide in the avatar’s journey
These elements were intentionally chosen to increase motivation, provide clear goals, and create a sense of progression.
Featuring AI generated videos created in minutes!
AI tools were used strategically to enhance immersion without overshadowing the learning objectives.
AI tools used:
Articulate Storyline AI supported the addition of sound effects which were incorporated to provide immediate feedback cues, helping learners quickly interpret outcomes (e.g., success, retry, or progression) and enhancing the overall game-like experience.
Freepik AI Video Generator transformed static visuals into short animated scenarios, helping illustrate the avatar’s progress at each level
Using AI in this way allowed me to create richer media quickly and efficiently while maintaining alignment with the instructional goals.
The avatar's journey map is the company's logo!
To make the experience feel meaningful and relevant to learners, I embedded the organization’s identity throughout the design.
The organization’s logo served as the visual map for the avatar’s journey
Brand colors, tone, and language were incorporated across screens
Avatar names reflected actual cohort participants, adding a personal and community-centered touch
This approach strengthened learner connection and reinforced the authenticity of the experience.
The language select screen leads the learner to the desired journey path.
Because the organization primarily communicates in Spanish, I designed the experience to be fully bilingual. Each avatar pathway was available in both English and Spanish, expanding three possible journeys into six.
This ensured the experience was inclusive and aligned with the linguistic needs of the audience.
Contextual hints are provided in the earlier levels to scaffold and minimize frustration.
To balance challenge with support, I incorporated scaffolding strategies such as contextual hints and opportunities to retry questions. These features allowed learners to learn from mistakes, build confidence, and progress without frustration.
Results and Takeaways
The quiz successfully extended learning beyond the live workshop by providing an engaging way for participants to practice and reinforce key public speaking concepts. Feedback highlighted increased motivation and a strong sense of connection to the experience.
Several participants from the 2025 Runway for Mom cohort took the quiz and shared positive feedback about the experience, highlighting its creativity and level of engagement. As participant Ivania Garcia noted:
“So proud of the creativity and innovation behind this interactive portfolio piece. This is a great example of how learning design can be engaging, personalized, and fun — not just ‘check-the-box’ training.”
🌟Insight/🧠What I Learned
Gamification with purpose: Mechanics should reinforce mastery, not distract from it
Designing for multiple audiences: Portfolio version required simplifying interactions
Personalization matters: Branding and community context increased relevance & motivation
Future iteration: Learner analytics and additional scenarios could deepen practice
